Happy birthday to my wonderful mother!

It was my lovely Mum’s birthday today and of course I have forgotten to take pictures of her gifts. Typical. Oh well. We saw her for breakfast this morning and then she went off to do what she had planned and me and the girls decorated a cake for her. Apparently, to quote my oldest daughter, I am better at sewing than cake decorating! It isn’t the first time it has been mentioned, but I continue to prove her right! Still, she could be a little more tactful about it! I think it turned out just fine.

Cake for Mum

Home-grown raspberries

Giant raspberry

We used raspberries from our garden for the cake. The late fruiting ones we grow are really big, much bigger than the ones we get earlier in the summer, but they are not as prolific. We made a basic vanilla cake yesterday, then made a chocolate icing from one of my Nigella books this morning. It was a fun activity to do with the girls, but boy, was it messy! I should have taken pictures of the aftermath, but it is kind of embarrassing to admit how much mess I make when using the kitchen!

We got together with some friends this afternoon, who we have not been able to see for several weeks. Their daughter had a bicycle accident and had a head injury that meant she needed to be kept calm and mellow for a number of weeks. A very difficult thing to do at the best of times, but in the middle of summer, with a younger, very active brother around – phew! – not an easy task. We have missed them very much and it was great to see them again and for the girls to be able to have fun together. On top of which, the mums had lots of catching up to do! It was especially nice to be able to see a hardcopy of the Greencraft magazine in which Karen was recently published.

Happy birthday, Mum!
