Can you hear me?

Our daughter started kindergarten this year and part of the programme for the new year involves hearing, vision and dental screening. We weren’t a bit concerned when she was called for follow-up testing for her hearing, assuming that she had difficulty because she was recovering from a cold. Today’s extensive testing determined that she has significant, permanent, unilateral hearing loss. It was a shock to say the least. It is still sinking in. We don’t yet know the extent, whether it will worsen or even what caused it. She will need to be seen by our doctor and a specialist, so we have a lot to learn. She may need a hearing aid. We know that her other ear compensates, so overall she can hear functionally well, but she will have trouble localizing sound and hearing when there is a lot of background noise.

However, she is as bright and perky as ever and not a bit bothered right now. She was just happy to have been given 4 stickers: 2 for her and 2 for her little sister.
